Newcastle Deaf Centre

1 May 2026

What does this community space/venue do?
The SVP Deaf Centre Newcastle is an inclusive community hub that brings people together through advocacy, education, cultural events, family and youth support, and partnerships that promote accessibility, empowerment, young leadership and community connection.

What is VIY doing?
VIY in partnership with Dulux, will deliver a refurbishment project at Newcastle Deaf Centre, focused on improving key internal spaces used by the community.
Young people, supported by professional decorators, will redecorate the main room, reception area and a basement space currently affected by mould. Works will include preparation, treatment of affected surfaces where required, and full redecoration to create clean, safe and welcoming environments.
Through the project, young people will gain hands-on experience in painting and decorating, while working towards accredited qualifications and developing practical skills, confidence and employability.

What will be the impact of our project?
The project will have a direct and meaningful impact on the Newcastle Deaf Centre by improving the quality, safety and appearance of its core spaces. Addressing the mould in the basement and redecorating key areas will create a healthier, more welcoming environment for staff, service users and visitors. For the young people involved, the project provides valuable real-world experience in a live setting, helping them to develop practical skills, achieve recognised qualifications and build confidence. Working alongside Dulux professionals also offers insight into industry standards and potential career pathways.More widely, the project demonstrates the power of partnership working, bringing together a national brand, a community organisation and local young people to deliver lasting social value and positive change.

Denis Healey

20 March 2026

What does this community space/venue do?
The Denis Healey Community Centre is an amazing, resident-led space run by Seacroft Community on Top. The building has a community gym and garage, as well as countless sessions throughout the week for children and families of all ages run by SCOT and other local organisations and groups.
Whether you want to get active, meet new people, find support or start your own thing, it’s all here
What is VIY doing?
The project involves renovating an existing office space, including full painting and decorating (P&D) works to refresh and modernise the interior. A new stud wall will be installed to improve the office layout, creating a more functional and efficient workspace.
In addition to the internal works, we will also be developing the external area to enhance usability and aesthetics, which may include landscaping, seating, or other improvements depending on site requirements.
What will be the impact of our project?
Improving the functionality of the new office space will add significant value to service users, providing a safe and comfortable environment to discuss benefits support and access other services. It will also give the venue a dedicated space for administration, day-to-day operations, finance management, and building networks. Overall, the enhanced layout will create a more functional and efficient workspace for staff, improving the delivery of services and operations.

Bentinck Miners Welfare 2

1 May 2026

What does this community space/venue do?
The Bentinck Miners Welfare in Kirkby-in-Ashfield is a long-standing community hub and registered charity, originally established to serve local mining families. Today it provides a wide range of social, leisure, and recreational opportunities for the community, including live entertainment, bingo and pool nights, children’s play areas, sports facilities, and function rooms for events. With its family-friendly atmosphere and mix of activities, it plays a vital role in keeping local people connected, offering a welcoming space for all ages to meet, take part in events, and celebrate the area’s mining heritage.
What is VIY doing?
VIY will be delivering a large-scale outdoor project, constructing a raised timber music stage complete with a roof, decked flooring, and cladded back and side walls. As part of the works, existing benches will be repurposed into new seating, and damaged wooden play equipment will be repaired and upgraded. These improvements will allow the play area—currently closed due to safety concerns from broken and loose timber—to be safely reopened for children. All timber play equipment will also be repainted to give it a fresh, revitalised finish.

Inside, the lounge area at the Bentinck is dated, with 1980s-style floral carpeting, old décor, and worn wallpaper and bar fittings. VIY will fully transform this space by installing tongue-and-groove panelling, new bar worktops, and a refreshed colour scheme to create a modern, updated look. New flooring will also be installed to complete the renovation.

In the final week, if time allows, work will extend to the toilets, which are similarly outdated and in poor decorative condition. These will be upgraded to align with the modern, refreshed style introduced throughout the rest of the Bentinck.

What will be the impact of our project?
These improvements will have a strong positive impact on how the space is used and perceived by the community.

The new outdoor stage, seating, and safe play equipment will create a more welcoming and functional environment, encouraging greater use for socialising, performances, and community events. By repairing and reopening the play area, the venue becomes more inclusive and family-friendly, helping attract more women’s groups, parents, and children who may previously have avoided it due to safety concerns.

Internally, the refreshed lounge will provide a more modern, comfortable space suitable for a wider range of activities, drawing in new users and increasing overall engagement.

The installation of LED lighting in the toilets will improve energy efficiency, reducing running costs and supporting the long-term sustainability of the building.

Together, these upgrades position the venue to host larger events such as festivals and live music, increasing footfall and strengthening its role as a vibrant community hub.
