Manor Farm Community Association is your local charity and providing a wide range of community services and has been activities for the people of Walsall for over 47 years. Whether it’s a new Hobby or Interest, Children’s Activities, Services for Older People, Sports and Leisure Activities and Facilities, Employment Support, Help to Get Online, Social Prescribing, Conference Facilities or a Venue for your group – Manor Farm will have something for everyone.

What does this community space/venue do?
The Organisation was founded by Captain J Glynn-Jones and David Davies, later to become Lord Davies of Llandinam – two good friends who made the major contribution to the foundation of the Boys’ Clubs Movement in Wales following the end of the First World War. Capt Glynn, appointed as Welfare Officer of the Ocean Group of Collieries scattered over the South Wales coalfields, he was immediately faced with the problems of the adolescent ‘collier boy’.
In 1922, Miners’ Welfare Organisations linked with the Ocean Group of Collieries. The United National Collieries and other colliery companies came to the conclusion that welfare schemes would make little impact on the ‘collier boy’ if there were no Boys’ Clubs in which they could be engaged.
In 1922 the first Boys’ Club was opened in Treharris, to be followed by the establishment of other Boys’ Clubs at Nantymoel, Ton Pentre & Gelli, Treorchy, Wattstown and Nine Mile Point.These were led by Full-time youth workers on a scale unparalleled elsewhere in Great Britain, even during a time of economic depression. Capt Glynn wanted every boy to be a member of a club which provided healthy exercise, cultural activities and discipline. He also beleived that the boys had a responsibility to the community to which they belong.

What is VIY doing?
Overhaul and modernisation of disabled toilet to encourage greater use of building by disabled users – current disabled toilet is in dire need of renovation.
-Full refurbishment of male and female toilets to better utilise existing space and improve overall user experience of building – current toilets are poorly laid out and the club receives a lot of negative feedback about them.
-General redecoration of most used spaces to improve aesthetic and feel of the club.

What will be the impact of our project?
Our project at Treorchy Boys & Girls Club will improve the safety, hygiene and overall environment of the building by painting and repairing the toilets, redecorating the kitchen and games room, and insulating the bathrooms. These improvements will create a cleaner, warmer and more welcoming space for young people, encouraging pride, respect and increased engagement with the club. In the long term, the project will support young people’s wellbeing, strengthen community pride, and help ensure the club remains a safe, sustainable space for the future.

The Social Action Hub 3

What does this community space/venue do?
The Social Action Hub in Rainworth is a community-focused space dedicated to supporting local residents through practical projects, skills development and volunteering opportunities. It works with young people and adults to deliver hands-on initiatives that improve local facilities, strengthen community pride and build confidence and employability skills. By partnering with local venues, community groups and organisations, the hub helps identify areas in need of improvement and mobilises volunteers to carry out meaningful social action projects. Its work not only enhances physical spaces within Rainworth but also creates pathways for personal development, teamwork and community engagement.
What is VIY doing?
VIY will be transforming a currently unused area into a welcoming community café and safe space for women and girls to attend group sessions in a warm, supportive environment. The indoor space will be upgraded with the addition of a wooden-effect feature wall to complement the existing white PVC cladding, creating a more inviting and modern feel. In addition to the internal improvements, VIY will enhance the exterior by building new planters, exploring the possibility of installing a sheltered seating area, and delivering an overall facelift to the main entrance to improve the building’s appearance and accessibility.
What will be the impact of our project?
The community impact will be significant, particularly for women and girls, by creating a dedicated, safe and welcoming environment where they can come together, build confidence and access support. By transforming an unused space into a warm and inclusive community café and safe space, the project will help reduce isolation, strengthen peer networks and provide opportunities for positive engagement in a setting where women and girls feel comfortable and secure.
From a community safety perspective, improving and activating the space increases natural surveillance and positive use of the area, which can help reduce anti-social behaviour and create a stronger sense of ownership and pride. Providing structured group sessions and a consistent safe space also offers early-intervention opportunities, supporting wellbeing, building resilience and empowering women and girls with knowledge, skills and trusted relationships.
With funding from the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner focused on improving facilities for women and girls, this project directly contributes to creating safer spaces, increasing access to support, and fostering a stronger, more connected community where women and girls feel valued, heard and protected.
