Project Overview

VIY partnered with St Edmunds Community Hall to refurbish and refresh the main hall, stage area, reception, and meeting room, spaces that have gone without significant updates for nearly 20 years. The renovations aimed to create a more appealing and functional environment for current and future users, helping to attract new audiences, increase hall hire revenue, and ensure the sustainability of this vital community hub.

Located in a deprived area of Southend, St Edmunds Hall is managed by trustees and volunteers, offering affordable facilities for various community groups, including fitness classes, youth programs, cultural events, and healthy living sessions. This project provided an essential uplift, ensuring the hall remains accessible and affordable for disadvantaged groups while adapting to rising operating costs.

Project Overview

The project at St Matthews Children’s Action Group (WhatCabin) involved painting the interior and exterior of the building, which hadn’t been refreshed in over 15 years. Interior repainting replaced outdated, garish primary colours with calming tones proven to benefit children’s mood and focus, creating a more welcoming environment for alternative provision classes. Exterior updates aimed to uplift the space, encouraging more families to use the venue.

Retrofitting measures included installing secondary glazing, improving draught exclusion on external doors, and adding water-saving devices, making the building more comfortable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective. These improvements align with the group’s mission to provide free, inclusive play sessions and activities for children aged 5-12 in a welcoming, supportive environment.

Since 1989, the WhatCabin has served as a vital community hub, offering workshops, social events, and free play schemes where children can explore sports, art, self-esteem building, and more, while shaping their own experiences through participation.

Project Overview

Be The Change is an award-winning youth organisation based in Bolton, dedicated to empowering young people to become a positive force for change.

As part of this project, VIY will contribute to the ongoing development of the new Be The Change Youth Centre by creating a podcasting room, a computer studio, and a counselling room on the upper floor of the building.
