About the project

What does this community space/venue do?
Tredegarville Church in Wales Primary School is a primary school serving children from the local Cardiff community. It provides a safe and supportive environment where young people begin their educational journey, developing core skills in learning, communication and confidence. Like many schools in inner-city areas, it plays an important role not only in education but also in supporting the wellbeing and development of the children who attend.
The school provides classroom learning, creative activities and outdoor play, giving pupils opportunities to learn both academically and socially. Spaces within the school are used throughout the day by staff and pupils for teaching, group work, and pastoral support, helping children feel settled and supported as they progress through their early years of education.
Schools such as Tredegarville are a central part of the local community and rely on their environments being welcoming, functional and well maintained. Improvements to these spaces help create a more positive and engaging atmosphere for pupils and staff alike, ensuring the school continues to be a place where children feel comfortable, supported and motivated to learn.
What is VIY doing?
As part of this project at Tredegarville Church in Wales Primary School, Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) will deliver improvement works to restore and refresh a small outdoor area used by pupils and staff.
The project will involve removing an existing planter/benched area that has deteriorated and become rotten, and constructing a new replacement using treated timber to ensure the space remains safe, functional and long-lasting. In addition, the team will prepare and repaint the timber arbour in the same area, helping to protect the structure and improve the overall appearance of the space.
All works will be delivered under the supervision of experienced trade mentors. Participants will gain practical experience in carpentry, measuring and cutting timber, fixing techniques, surface preparation and painting.
By completing these improvements, VIY will help restore a valuable outdoor space for the school while providing young people with the opportunity to develop practical skills, build confidence and work towards accredited learning outcomes through meaningful community work.
What will be the impact of our project?
The improvements at Tredegarville Church in Wales Primary School will restore and enhance an outdoor space used by pupils and staff for learning, relaxation and social activities. By removing the deteriorated planter/benches and replacing it with a newly constructed structure, the area will become safer, more durable and visually improved. Repainting the canopy will also protect the timber and refresh the appearance of the space, helping it remain a welcoming feature within the school grounds.
For the school, the project will revitalise a part of the outdoor environment that supports informal learning and outdoor engagement. Well-maintained spaces encourage pupils to spend time outside, supporting wellbeing, creativity and positive social interaction.
A key impact of the project is the opportunity it provides for young people to gain hands-on experience in construction. Participants will work alongside experienced mentors to learn practical skills such as timber construction, measuring, cutting, fixing, preparation and painting. Through this process they will build confidence, develop teamwork skills and gain an understanding of the standards required within the construction industry.
The project will leave a lasting improvement for the school while also supporting the development of the young people and volunteers taking part, combining community benefit with meaningful skills training.
