TLS Boxing
About the project
A VIY fairytale project. A derelict gym for 20 yrs, local boxing coach Richard Vassel has taken 2 years off his own work as a carpenter. As a project to remedy his own mental health and to provide a safe, positive space for local people, he’s dedicated the past 2 years to transforming this building into a boxing gym for all in his local community.
He’s garnered support from the local trade community to help on the works together, and to upcycle/reuse second hand equipment. Local people from the community have been thrilled to see the building come back to life – local people from the community have helped out where they can, and prepping food for the workers too!
The aim of our VIY project is to finish off this 2 year long passion project to get the club finally up and running, adding finishing touches with ‘knockout’ flooring and creating bench seating for the main boxing hall, tiling the toilets and ice bath room and painting & decorating throughout.
Thanks to our co-funders and partners on this project Lambeth Council, Powerday Foundation, Sport England and Toolstation, with materials supplied from Dulux and Travis Perkins.
Richard’s vision:
To provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to come together and enjoy the benefits of sports and physical activity. By fostering a sense of community and collaboration, we aspire to not only promote health and fitness but also to cultivate a supportive network where individuals can have a safe space. With a strong emphasis on accessibility and affordability, we aim to break down the financial barriers that often hinder people from participating in sports and recreation. Through the dedication of our volunteer mentors and experienced coaches, we are committed to ensuring that every member receives the guidance and support they need to reach their full potential. Together, we will build a vibrant and empowering space that encourages personal development, teamwork, and a lifelong love for sports.
