What does this community space/venue do?
The Hairy Dog is an established live music and entertainment venue in Derby, providing a platform for local and emerging musicians alongside a busy programme of live music and events. The venue has a strong focus on creating an inclusive and lively environment where people can come together to enjoy live performances, socialise and experience a range of entertainment. It plays an important role within the local music scene, regularly hosting bands and artists and providing opportunities for performers to reach new audiences.
VIY will look to transform several tired and underused areas of the venue, creating more welcoming and functional spaces for artists and visitors, whilst installing accommodation into the venue in an outdated storage room.
Two existing green rooms/dressing rooms will receive a full refurbishment, including new or refurbished flooring, fresh decoration and improved functionality.
A central storage room will be converted into a larger green room or additional artist space.
The toilet and shower facilities will be significantly refreshed, including floor refurbishment and repainting of the toilet cubicles in modern, vibrant colours.
An unused upstairs storage room full to the ceiling, will become artist accommodation and a chill-out space, including bunk beds, new flooring, plasterboarding, potential insulation, full redecoration and a comfortable breakout area.
The project will significantly improve the venue’s facilities, with a particular focus on creating new on-site accommodation for touring artists.
Transforming the currently unused upstairs storage room into comfortable artist accommodation and a chill-out space will provide the venue with a facility it currently doesn’t have. This could make the venue more attractive to touring artists, reduce the need for external accommodation and support the venue in hosting a wider range of performers.
Alongside this, refurbishing the dressing rooms, green room and toilet/shower facilities will create a much more professional, comfortable and welcoming environment for artists and visitors.
