Swaffham Town Pound
About the project
The Town Pound in Swaffham, a historic landmark constructed around 1520, is a cherished local heritage site. Over time, the stone walls had deteriorated, leaving the structure vulnerable to weather damage and threatening its long-term preservation. Thanks to a collaborative effort between local partners, funders, and team VIY, the Town Pound has now undergone a full conservation project, combining heritage restoration with meaningful youth engagement.
This was VIY’s first heritage-focused project, working with specialist heritage contractor Cliveden Conservation to mentor both young people and VIY mentors in traditional building and conservation skills. The restoration was funded by Breckland Council, Historic England, and The National Lottery Heritage Fund. See more in the film below.
The restored Town Pound will now be stable, weatherproof, and preserved for future generations, while also serving as an inspiring example of how young people can contribute to protecting local heritage.
The project
The project focused on repointing and repairing the historic stone walls to ensure long-term structural stability and protection against the elements. Key elements included:
- Repointing and repair of the historic stone walls
- Mentorship from Cliveden Conservation for both VIY mentors and young people
- Hands-on training in traditional conservation techniques, including brickwork and heritage skills
- Ensuring the Town Pound is preserved in a stable and weather-resistant condition
