What does this community space/venue do?

Our charitable purpose is: ‘To advance education and provide or assist in the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure-time occupation where such provision or assistance in provision is in the interests of social welfare and is made with the object of improving the conditions of life of the community…’.

Actually, Royston Wardieburn Community Centre SCIO is a vibrant, welcoming hub in the heart of the community, home to a busy sports hall, café area, and spaces used by local groups, families, elected members, commercial lets and council services every week. Our social responsibility remit is to provide a community meal and low-cost pantry on a weekly basis, paid for by the Management Committee trustees.

What is VIY doing?

Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) have partnered with Screwfix to support Royston Wardieburn Community Centre, Our aim is to make the outside area more appealing and usable space as well as some internal work
External work
Regarding the options for the outside area, we will proceed with the artificial grass.

The scope of work will involve lifting and removing the existing soft matting for disposal, preparing the base using sharp sand, and raking it level measure cut and fit new artificial grass
VIY to design and build 4 x square planters using tanalised wood to replace the tired Brocken existing planters. Design and build 2 x wooden benches Build a storage unit with air flow and doors to store vegetable
Internal work
The granite Kitchen worktop has a large crack in it but we think we can fill the crack and make it look correct. In the existing kitchen we will adjust several base and wall unit doors so that they fit properly.

What will be the impact of our project?

Existing users are (hopefully) going to be able to work more efficiently in the kitchen and café area as there will be a better layout in the kitchen. We have been working over the past three years to try and make the centre more inviting by adding wildflower planting, seasonal planters at the front door and growing the vegetables for the community lunch. We have begun to paint the upstairs rooms that are used the most, so improving the look and feel of the kitchen and courtyard will complement what we are trying to do. We will also be buying some new furniture for the cafe area so that it will feel more ‘together’ decor-wise and be more inviting rather than just functional. This will also make our space more inviting for those who hire the space for birthday parties.
