Location: Greater Manchester

Other local partners: Cheshire Cricket Board, Dulux, ECB, GMCA, Lancashire Cricket Foundation, Travis Perkins

About the project

Our fourth project as part of the Inspiring Generations programme, using cricket to improve young people’s lives and create stronger, healthier communities in Greater Manchester.

The project:

We created an impressive raised decking area overlooking the pitch for more to spectators to watch their local cricket games, enjoy refreshments and host events for the local community, helping the club to become financially sustainable and secure.

The young people: 15 young volunteers from Active Tameside, Tameside Youth Justice Service and St Thomas More College

The impact:

  • Doubled their hospitality and events space to widen hosting & participation opportunities, for financial sustainability
  • All young people were first time volunteers and first time visitors to the club
  • Nothing but praise and active interest from the locals for the new community space

Accreditations gained: 25 City & Guilds Entry Level 3 in Painting & Decorating, Carpentry and Health & Safety

He enjoyed his time at the cricket club and loved the hands-on experience, it’s given him a great sense of achievement knowing that he has completed some great work, and he has said that it’s given him some guidance on what to do when he leaves school so thanks so much for the opportunity! We've been very impressed with the [young people's] attitude to the work and the quality of the installation, and particularly from the team of mentors too. This facility is absolutely superb Phil, President, Newton Cricket Club
Can’t thank VIY and the young people involved enough, we are completely delighted with the results. This project is part of a very worthy scheme providing young people from Tameside with invaluable skills and experience. We at Newton CC are very proud of being part, in a small way, of providing these opportunities. Newton Cricket Club, Facebook testimonial
Here at my 2nd VIY project I've gained my City and Guilds accreditation in joinery. I've also improved on my teambuilding skills as well as my communication skills. The best part about it was being able to see the finished product and to hear good feedback from everyone. I'm looking forward to my third project with VIY at Werneth Cricket Club.
