Hindley Cricket Club
About the project
Our 15th project on our Inspiring Generations programme and a record breaker for VIY…
The project:
Formed in 1920, Hindley St. Peter’s Cricket Club has been playing cricket at its Wigan Road ground close to the centre of the town for a hundred years, celebrating their centenary this year. Standing alone for its first 88 years, since 2008 the club has been part of the St. Peter’s Pavilion complex, a new facility bringing together the cricket club, Hindley ARLFC, St. Peter’s Church and youth organisations into a multi-use building for the benefit of the local community.
Through redecoration and some outdoor refurbishments see how we’ve boosted this community cricket club to help it survive and thrive for future generations.
The young people: 69 young people from the Growth Company (Wigan), Groundwork Cheshire/Lancashire and Three Towers Alternative Provision Academy
The impact:
- A record breaking number of young people on a single VIY project – all getting hands-on experience on the tools and working to benefit the local community
- Created a more welcoming place to play cricket for players and the local community to contribute towards the financial stability of their local club
- Fully refurbished changing rooms with a modern feel – more welcoming spaces to welcome cricketers for home and away players
- Built a BBQ outside to invite the local community to hire the club for events and serve food on a match day
- Built new picnic benches for spectators and increase membership
- Helped to repair the score board for cricket matches
- An extremely passionate Chair of the club volunteered his time to lead on a mini gardening project as part of the whole refurbishment
Accreditations gained: 37 Entry Level 3 City & Guilds accreditations gained in Health & Safety at work
