About the project

Chapel High School situated in Chapel-en-le-Frith in the Peak District is one of 44 schools involved in our mentoring programme funded by the Careers and Enterprise Company. This programme is targeted at years 8-10 and involves three interactions with our mentors. 34 students were selected by their teachers to participate in this programme, which included two employability workshops delivered by our team of experienced mentors. During these activity based sessions the students developed their teamwork and communication skills while learning about the construction industry. They were also given the opportunity to identify a suitable project for their final part of the programme that they and the rest of the school would benefit from.

The students decided to renovate their school allotment and to make it wheelchair friendly. Over the course of two sunny days in May the students gave their allotment a revamp and, with the help of the mentors built some potting benches, planters and a planter suitable for wheelchair uses too. The students gained new skills, in DIY especially over the course of the programme and were rewarded for their efforts not only with a new and improved allotment, but also with a City & Guilds accreditation in Carpentry.

Lesley Evans Careers Coordinator said of the programme “We would love to take part again next year. The students really enjoyed themselves, working outdoors in fabulous weather.  Thanks to the mentors, they were fantastic. – a really positive experience!”
