About the project

What does this community space/venue do?
the provision and maintenance of playing fields, recreation grounds and a village hall for the use of the inhabitants of Burniston, Cloughton and the neighbourhood thereof without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, including use for meetings, lectures and classes, and for other forms of recreation and leisure-time occupation, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said inhabitants.

What is VIY doing?
We are delivering a two-week practical construction and decorating project, engaging young people in hands-on learning while improving a valued community space.

In Week 1, VIY will lead carpentry works to build planters for growing produce and restore or construct outdoor seating, supporting the development of a functional and welcoming garden area.

In Week 2, VIY will deliver painting and decorating works to refresh a room adjacent to the main hall and the men’s toilet facilities, improving the quality and usability of indoor spaces.

Throughout the project, young people will work alongside experienced VIY mentors, gaining practical skills in carpentry and decorating, as well as employability skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving.

Where time allows, VIY mentors will also assess and carry out minor repairs to the outdoor toilet facilities to further enhance the site.

What will be the impact of our project?

The project will deliver meaningful improvements to both the indoor and outdoor facilities at Burniston & Cloughton Village Hall, enhancing its role as a key community hub. The creation of planters and improved seating will support a sustainable outdoor space where the community can grow fresh fruit and vegetables, encouraging healthier lifestyles and increased community engagement.

Internally, the redecoration of a community room and toilet facilities will provide cleaner, brighter, and more welcoming spaces for regular users, including sports groups and local residents.

For the young people involved, the project will have a significant personal impact. Participants will gain hands-on experience in carpentry and painting and decorating, developing practical trade skills alongside confidence, teamwork, and communication. This real-world experience helps to improve employability and provides a positive pathway into further training or work.

Overall, the project will leave a lasting physical improvement to the venue while delivering strong social value through skills development and community benefit.
