Project Overview
The project involves painting the entire venue in a neutral palette to attract external users and generate much-needed income, especially after council funding is set to cease next year. Other improvements include creating an accessible laptop bench to replace the current upstairs tables, upgrading old lighting to energy-efficient LEDs, and installing minimalist cupboards for better storage.
These updates will enable the venue to host a more diverse range of users and community groups, with new spaces designed for meetings or quiet, relaxing zones. This will make the venue more appealing for external hires, providing local groups with a valuable community hub while ensuring financial sustainability.

Project Overview
Mellish Sports Centre is a welcoming community hub and fitness centre in Bulwell, Nottingham, where fitness goes beyond lifting weights. Whether your goals are fitness, health, or overall wellbeing, they have a range of clubs and weekly activities to help you achieve them.
The project includes installing shelving to organise sports equipment, repainting the entrance and a studio for a refreshed look, and transforming an unused changing room into a function/meeting room for hire. This renovation will enhance the user experience, uplift the studio and entrance areas, and support the centre’s sustainability by generating additional revenue from room rentals.
Flo Skatepark Nottingham
2 December 2024
Project Manager Contact: rachel@teamviy.com
Project Overview
Flo Charitable Trust was established by a group of volunteers with the goal of preserving the skatepark when its previous tenants closed down the facility. It is a skateboarding-only space that offers coaching, women’s-only sessions, and hosts events and competitions for the skateboarding community.
The Trust is currently in the process of relocating to a new venue and will be closed for a few months during the transition. To continue serving the community, VIY will be supporting to build modular obstacles that can be used for workshops and outreach to individuals who may not have easy access to the current venue. These obstacles will also be transported to the new site once the move is complete.
Additionally, the world-class halfpipe, originally built for Olympic skater Sky Brown, requires varnishing and protective covering to preserve it over the winter months. As part of the move, VIY will also assist with general clearing and removal of outdated structures within the current venue.
These efforts will enable Flo to generate more revenue by offering new obstacles and expanding its outreach to communities that might otherwise be unable to attend the skatepark. By protecting the halfpipe, we are ensuring its longevity and smooth relocation when a new venue is secured. VIY’s work will also help ensure the future of the venue through essential preparatory tasks for the move.
The Garage Nottingham
17 December 2024
Project Manager Contact: rachel@teamviy.com
Project Overview
VIY is transforming a garage space into a functional storage area to house a tool-hire service for residents, a dry foods pantry, and storage for outdoor play equipment. Additionally, a sink and worktop will be installed, providing volunteers from the community garden with a space to wash hands and tools and enjoy refreshments indoors during their volunteering activities.
This project will create a valuable new community resource for residents who currently lack access to these facilities. The tool storage will support the community garden and its volunteers, while families will benefit from access to outdoor play equipment and seasonal treats like ice lollies in summer and hot chocolate in winter. These amenities will encourage greater use of the outdoor space and foster stronger community connections. Volunteers will also have a comfortable indoor area for breaks, helping to sustain and grow volunteer engagement in the area.
