Corey, 20, joined our VIY project at Brasshouse Community Centre in Smethwick, funded by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council via the UKSPF, after being out of work for over six months.
Eager to retrain for a career in carpentry, Corey faced challenges including limited experience and transport issues. On site, however, he quickly proved himself to be reliable, hard-working, and enthusiastic.
As part of the project, Corey worked alongside other local young people to transform the outdoor garden areas, making them accessible for disabled users and creating a more enjoyable space for the community.
With support from our Youth Progression team, Corey:
- Updated his CV tailored to construction roles
- Explored local job and apprenticeship opportunities
- Received guidance on CSCS card training
Thanks to VIY and referral partner Think Sandwell, Corey has applied for and been offered a Carpentry Apprenticeship with Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council.
