Brandon, 21, first joined VIY as a learner on our Hartcliffe Flower Farm project, after being referred through the South Bristol Youth Guarantee.
Having left his job at an alternative education school to pursue a career in the trades, particularly carpentry, Brandon had been out of work for several months and was looking for a way to gain practical experience and move towards his goals.
From the moment he arrived on site, Brandon stood out for his initiative and positive attitude. He quickly picked up new skills, supported other learners and wasn’t afraid to step up when something needed doing. His steady approach and willingness to get stuck in made a real impression on the team.
That commitment led to an opportunity to join VIY’s South West and South Wales team as a Peer Mentor. In the role, Brandon supported other young people to build their confidence and skills, drawing on his own experience to help them take their next steps towards employment.
It’s a brilliant example of how a first opportunity can lead to something much bigger.
Brandon’s journey has also been featured in a BBC News article.
