Aidan and Tyler – Brothers with big dreams in construction

Aidan and Tyler, brothers with big dreams in construction! At 17 and 19, they joined our Brasshouse Community Centre refurbishment project, funded by Sandwell Council through the UKSPF and referred through Think Sandwell. Both wanted more hands-on construction experience and the confidence to take the next step in their careers.

Through hands-on experience on a live community project, they built carpentry and basic construction skills, learned to use tools safely, and gained confidence working as part of a team.

On top of this, our Progression Team gave one-to-one support with CVs, apprenticeship applications, and interview prep, helping them turn their new skills into opportunities. Both Aidan and Tyler are now a few months into Property Maintenance apprenticeships with the Bell Group and absolutely loving it! 👏

Tyler said: “The apprenticeship with Bell is amazing – I love my role and meeting new people every day. VIY gave me the confidence to apply, and Bell gave me the opportunity to grow in a real-world role.”

Aidan said: “To anyone thinking about taking part in a VIY project – go for it! Giving just one week of your time to help your community makes a real difference, not just for others, but for you too.”

Aidan and Tyler’s mum shares her thanks: “I just wanted to pass my deepest gratitude to Sarah (VIY progressions Co-ordinator), who helped my sons, Aidan and Tyler, get work experiences which led to an apprenticeship opportunity with the renowned Bell Group. She worked tirelessly with them building their CVs etc. She really is amazing.”
