What does this community space/venue do?

Berry Hill Park is one of Mansfield’s most valued green spaces, providing a welcoming environment for people of all ages to enjoy outdoor recreation, sport and community activities. The park is home to walking routes, open green spaces, sports facilities and a historic bandstand, which regularly hosts live music performances, community celebrations and family events that bring residents together. Recent investment has further enhanced the park with improved accessibility, new play facilities, landscaped areas and a community café, ensuring it continues to be a vibrant destination that promotes health, wellbeing, social inclusion and community pride for local people and visitors alike.

What is VIY doing?

VIY will deliver a comprehensive internal and external transformation of the historic Berry Hill Park Bandstand, creating a brighter, more welcoming and visually engaging community space.

Internally, works will focus on refurbishing the entrance corridor and the two adjoining office/storage rooms. Following clearance of these spaces by Mansfield District Council, VIY will redecorate the walls and ceilings, install decorative wall panelling and introduce feature detailing, such as a dado rail or contrasting colour scheme, to create a more modern and inviting finish. The existing worn flooring will also be replaced with durable carpet tiles, significantly improving the overall appearance and usability of the internal spaces.

Externally, the entire bandstand will be repainted to restore and preserve this important heritage structure. Localised masonry repairs will be undertaken to areas where the existing render has deteriorated, with damaged sections repaired and made good to improve both the appearance and longevity of the building. Due to the one-week project timeframe, repairs will focus on the areas in greatest need of attention to maximise the visual impact of the refurbishment.

A key feature of the project will be the installation of a stunning, historically themed ‘Party in the Park’ mural, celebrating the rich history of Berry Hill Park and the bandstand’s long-standing role as a venue for music, entertainment and community celebrations. This striking piece of artwork will create a vibrant focal point, helping to celebrate the park’s heritage while encouraging community pride and creating an attractive backdrop for future events and performances.

What will be the impact of our project?

The refurbishment of Berry Hill Park Bandstand will preserve and enhance one of Mansfield’s most recognisable community landmarks, creating a brighter, safer and more welcoming space for local residents and visitors. The improvements will provide a refreshed environment for community events, live music performances, educational activities and local celebrations, helping to increase use of the bandstand and encourage more people to enjoy everything the park has to offer.

The new historical ‘Party in the Park’ mural will celebrate the bandstand’s rich heritage and create a striking visual feature that reflects the park’s importance within the community. As well as improving the appearance of the building, the mural will help educate visitors about the site’s history, encourage community pride and create a popular attraction for park users.

The project will also have a lasting impact by providing young people with the opportunity to gain practical construction and painting & decorating skills while restoring a valued public asset. By investing in both the bandstand and the young people delivering the work, the project will leave a legacy that strengthens community pride, promotes local heritage and ensures this much-loved space continues to be enjoyed by residents for years to come.
