Josh, 18, attended our project at Restocked CIC, funded by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority through the UKSPF, with one goal in mind – to further his woodworking skills to set himself apart when applying to the super-competitive Lutherie (guitar making) course at Glasgow Clyde University. Previously self-taught, he wanted to earn a formal qualification and learn from experienced mentors.
“I started playing guitar at about 15 and started building them by 16 as I had wacky ideas for custom guitars I wanted to build… If I’d have commissioned these from other people, it would’ve costed me thousands! The VIY project helped me further my woodworking skills and work in a real environment with professionals who were happy to answer my questions and show me how to fix mistakes in a constructive way.”
While on the project, Josh earned an Entry Level 3 City & Guilds accreditation in Carpentry. Since completing the project, he has balanced a chef role (using his earnings to fix and sell guitars) and a military operations course – never losing sight of his goal.
Recently, Josh reached out to say thank you for his time on the project – and to share the amazing news: he’s been unconditionally accepted onto the Lutherie course at Glasgow Clyde University.
