What does this community space/venue do?
Llanishen & Lisvane Scout Group provides a safe, inclusive and welcoming community space for young people from the local area to develop practical life skills, confidence and resilience through the Scout programme. The venue hosts regular meetings and activities for children and young people across all Scout sections, offering opportunities to learn teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and outdoor skills.
Beyond weekly Scout sessions, the building serves as a valuable community asset, supporting local events, training, meetings and partnerships with other community organisations. It provides an accessible space where volunteers, families and young people can come together, strengthening community connections and encouraging active citizenship.
The Scout Group promotes personal development through a wide range of activities, including outdoor adventure, environmental projects, community volunteering and skills-based learning. By providing positive role models and a structured environment, the venue helps young people build confidence, gain recognised achievements and make meaningful contributions to their local community.
Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) will deliver a comprehensive refurbishment of the Llanishen & Lisvane Scout Group headquarters, improving both the appearance and functionality of the building while providing young people with hands-on construction training.
The project will include internal painting and decorating throughout the building, making good minor defects to walls and surfaces, boxing in exposed pipework, repairing damaged flooring and replacing defective wall and floor finishes where required. Externally, works will include improving access areas, carrying out minor repairs to paving, clearing and reinstating an overgrown garden area with new timber sleeper borders, and completing additional repairs to enhance the overall condition of the site.
Throughout the project, young people will work alongside qualified tradespeople, mentors and volunteers to learn practical construction skills across painting and decorating, carpentry, basic building repairs and landscaping. Participants will gain valuable site experience while working towards accredited construction qualifications, helping them develop confidence, employability skills and pathways into further training or employment.
VIY’s refurbishment project will create a brighter, more welcoming and better-maintained environment for the hundreds of young people, volunteers and community members who use the Scout headquarters each year. Improvements to the internal and external areas will enhance the overall appearance, functionality and durability of the building, helping to protect it from further deterioration while reducing ongoing maintenance requirements.
The improved facilities will provide a more comfortable and inspiring space for Scout meetings, skills sessions, training and community activities, encouraging greater participation and supporting the continued growth of the group. By carrying out the refurbishment with young people working alongside skilled tradespeople and volunteers, the project will also provide accredited construction training, practical work experience and nationally recognised qualifications, helping participants develop employability skills and confidence.
In addition, the project will strengthen community pride, extend the lifespan of an important local asset and ensure the venue remains fit for purpose for many years to come, allowing Llanishen & Lisvane Scout Group to continue delivering valuable opportunities for young people and supporting the wider community.
