About the project

Firebug is one of Leicester’s most established independent grassroots music and arts venues, playing a vital role in supporting emerging musicians, local bands, comedians, artists, promoters, and creative practitioners. Since opening in 2004, Firebug has become a key part of the city’s cultural landscape, providing an accessible platform for live music, comedy, exhibitions, film screenings, club nights, and community-led events. The venue is known for its inclusive and welcoming atmosphere, attracting a diverse audience from across Leicester and beyond, and has built a strong reputation as a safe and supportive space for people from all backgrounds.
What is VIY doing?
Under Option 2, VIY will support FireBug in transforming its backstage facilities to help create dedicated on-site accommodation and significantly improve the experience for visiting artists. Following the venue’s completion of the demolition, structural alterations, and bathroom installation works, VIY will undertake the refurbishment of the kitchen area, main corridor, and three adjoining rooms. Works will include full redecoration, new colour schemes, flooring improvements, construction of bespoke bunk beds, and the creation of modern, comfortable dressing room and green room spaces. The project will transform a series of tired and underutilised rooms into welcoming, practical, and artist-focused facilities, helping FireBug better support touring musicians whilst enhancing the professionalism and functionality of its backstage environment.
What will be the impact of our project?

The impact of this project will be felt far beyond the physical improvements being made to the space. By creating dedicated on-site accommodation and improved backstage facilities, FireBug will be able to offer touring artists a safe, comfortable, and welcoming place to stay overnight, reducing the need for late-night travel and helping performers feel more rested, supported, and valued. The introduction of dedicated sleeping, dressing, and green room facilities will create a much more homely and professional environment, positively contributing to artists’ wellbeing, privacy, and overall experience whilst performing at the venue.

The improvements will also strengthen FireBug’s ability to attract and support touring musicians, enhancing its reputation as a venue that invests in artist welfare and grassroots music. When not being used by performers, the refurbished spaces will provide valuable community assets that can be utilised for meetings, workshops, creative projects, training opportunities, and other community-focused activities. As a result, the project will not only improve facilities for artists but also create flexible, multi-purpose spaces that benefit local people and support FireBug’s wider role as a community and cultural hub within Leicester
