About the project

Voodoo Daddy’s is a much-loved grassroots music venue in Norwich, known for its unique character, vibrant live music scene, creative cocktails, and retro gaming offer. As one of the city’s standout independent venues, it plays a vital role in supporting emerging artists and bringing live music to the local community.

This project marks the launch of VIY’s new partnership with Music Venue Trust, delivering the Stay The Night  and Feel At Home programmes. Funded by the grassroots levy – a £1 contribution from tickets at larger live events, distributed by the LIVE Trust – these programmes are helping protect, secure and improve grassroots music venues across the UK. More on this partnership here.

The project

Voodoo Daddy’s marks our first Stay The Night project, supporting the venue as it expanded into a newly acquired neighbouring building to create much-needed infrastructure for touring artists.

The works transformed previously unsuitable space into a fully self-contained artist accommodation and backstage area. This included:

• A new living and sleeping area with six bunk beds
• Installation of a shower room and functioning toilet
• A kitchenette for touring artists
• Upgraded backstage and green room facilities
• Decoration and finishing across multiple spaces
• Creation of additional storage areas

Impact

This project is about improving the conditions artists work in. Proper rest, access to food, and safe overnight space are basic requirements — and providing them makes touring healthier, fairer, and more sustainable.

By upgrading Voodoo Daddy’s facilities, the venue is now better able to support touring artists and improve their overall experience on site. This strengthens the venue’s offer, while also contributing to a more resilient and sustainable grassroots touring ecosystem.

Young People

• 21 young people volunteered on this project, referred by Future Education, City College Norwich, YMCA Norfolk, UK Futures
• 15 young people gained at least one accreditation in Painting & Decorating or Health & Safety
• VIY continues to work with and track young people’s progression over a period of 12 months, so we can report back on their positive next steps in due course
