About the project

What does this community space/venue do?
Welcome to Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park! Opening to visitors in 2017, the wildlife park serves as a hub for the local community, welcoming 20,000 visitors a year as well as hosting schools, young people and other local community groups for tours, talks and workshops. The park is home to over 100 species of mammal, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates – many of which are threatened.
What is VIY doing?
VIY will be creating large gabion-style benching in the bird-watching area to enhance the visitor experience. This will involve joinery skills. If time allows, young people will also help build planters and bird boxes.
What will be the impact of our project?
This will create a more welcoming viewing area for customers to enjoy and relax, while observing over 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, many of which are under threat.

We will be building an accessible ramp/ bridge for wheelchair users and young children to see into the Otter enclosure.
Also in the picnic area there is currently no accessible tables for wheelchair users, so this is another thing we will create and build with the young people.
